Final Light Performance Assessments

BENCHMARKS: What we will learn and be able to do:

  1. Classify a variety of materials as those that can reflect or absorb light.
  2. Investigate the properties of transparent and opaque objects (e.g., plastic wrap and aluminum foil).
  3. Describe how light can be reflected by a mirror, bent by a lens or absorbed by the object.
  4. Describe ways light can interact with matter, such as transmission (which includes refraction), absorption and scattering (which includes reflection).

Essential Questions: To Guide Our Scientific Quest For Knowledge About Light:

  1. How are sound and light energy related to each other?
  2. How does matter impact sound and light?
  3. How are sound and light energy essential to our lives?
  4. How can we manipulate sound and light energy?

How Light Bulbs Work

Learn the interesting process behind how light bulbs work and how they are made with this great video. Incandescent light bulbs are simple but extremely useful devices that are used all around the world. Find out how the glass is prepared and transformed into the final design that ends up lighting your home. Specialized production lines combine glass, filaments, aluminium, wires and other parts to create bulbs that are well tested before making their way to store shelves.

Learn about the Sun
Enjoy this fascinating Sun video. Learn more about the Sun and how research into the way we view it has changed over hundreds of years. Early scientists such as Galileo changed our perspective on the Sun with the invention of telescopes to better view the star, recording valuable data such as information about sunspots. After a number of important solar discoveries, scientists of modern times have been able to make use of complex technological advances, using satellites to obtain amazing imagery and facts about the Sun. Find out what causes the spectacular northern lights (aurora), learn more about solar winds, space weather and radiation that all affect life here on Earth.
